Developer Track

This track will focus on providing developers with a glimpse into what’s happening in the development world, highlighting both the new and the cutting edge.

Soft Skills for Engineers

Over and over we're inundated with the mythos of the 10x engineer - the wizard who sits in a dark corner, mashing keys and saving the business day after day.I believe in the 10x engineer - but I don't think this vision of him or her is the correct one. Instead, the 10x engineer I have in mind is rarely in a dark corner, rarely mashing keys for hours at a time. Yes, of course, this engineer can code - but coding is a 1x activity. Instead, this engineer has soft skills - leadership, empathy, charisma - and they use these skills to make their 10x impact. In this presentation I'll describe why these skills will get you to a 10x faster than coding will and we'll practice some exercises that improve leadership, empathy and charisma.

How to prevent too much success from spoiling your ability to innovate

Rapid growth and success can convert small/agile software companies into bureaucratic monoliths. It can happen before anyone notices. Moreover, once a company discovers it has a problem; it is usually too late to do anything about it. This presentation will discuss the common symptoms that can help you identify when you are starting to slip. In addition, it will present tips to diagnose and treating this problem before it gets out of hand. Planning the right organization, culture, process, and architecture is critical to nurturing and accelerating innovation as your software company scales. During this discussion, we will review how the DevOps culture is vital to accelerate growth, how to leverage Continuous Delivery, and how to create Lean processes that ensure that value delivery increases as you scale your software organization.

Building the hype while building the product

Technology is versatile and a good solution can help solve problems in a wide range of industries, but what happens when the existing solutions don’t work for all use cases? How do you position a solution as having wide appeal when it is designed with specific uses cases in mind? Looking at healthcare, typical security solutions that work for most technology might not work for medical devices. A device like a cardiac monitor can’t afford an update that pauses its function while in use by a patient. Using the medical device industry as an example, this talk will explore the value of designing existing technology that can be perceived as niche and going against the overwhelming convention.

From hype to real world solutions - how Blockchain have transformed the industries

Discover the benefits of the Blockchain technology and start transforming your business just like in the beginnings of the Internet 30 years ago. We will reviewed a number of industries that have been transformed by the Blockchain innovation and eliminated the need for a constant exchange and replication of information. The information is stored in shared place, called a shared ledger and accessed when needed by authorized businesses and consumers forming a new information and data highway. It eliminated the need for businesses and consumers to hold their own copy of the data, either on paper or in silo databases.

Build, Deploying, and Scaling Containers in a Modern Pipeline on AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure

Containers have been all of the rage for the past few years, but in 2020 they have become less of a "hot new tech" and more of an industry best practice. Every startup should be leveraging containerized code and modern CI/CD pipelines to set their development teams up for success.Leveraging modern container / CI best practices give developers more power and provide more sound testing and deployment practices for your organization. In this session the Tragic team will cover best practices for developing a pipeline and leveraging code containers. As well as discussing how these topics should scale for a new startup vs a growing startup building out a robust development team.+ Understanding Code Containers and Orchestration+ Understanding CI / CD+ Pipeline Architecture+ Scaling Your Team ProcessesThe session will provide context and code examples for all major cloud providers: AWS, Google Cloud, Azure.

Fundamentals of the Lightning Network

Over the last decade, Bitcoin has been gaining adoption as a currency and testing its potential as a store of value, unit of account, and medium of exchange. However, during times of high network usage it has had difficulty scaling to meet the demand of its users. The Lightning Network was born as a pragmatic solution to solve this very problem, without compromising the security of the underlying network. This layer 2 technology allows Bitcoin to operate with extremely low fees and scale up to millions of transactions per second. The goal of this session is to give a technical introduction of the fundamentals of the Lightning Network — Bitcoin scaling, network architecture, channels, routing, and HTLC's. This session will be presented from the perspective of a curious software developer and will delve into the low level details of the contracts implemented to secure the network. It is recommended that attendees have a basic understanding of Bitcoin transactions before attending.

How to take the 'Hard' out of Hardware Development

"Hardware is like Software except you have to get it right the first time." Are you interested in developing a hardware product? Derek will explain how to go from concept to production, and how to avoid making mistakes along the way. Newer tools allow you to develop hardware based solutions easier and less expensive than previously. We will discuss how to go from ideation, to prototype, and into production.

Scaling Selenium: End-to-end browser testing for a growing team (that actually works)

End-to-end testing is a critical component of a comprehensive test suite for real production software. At the same time, true end-to-end tests require browser-based frameworks, which are notoriously flaky, slow, and expensive to run.Investing in E2E tests can supercharge the stability of your whole product. Fast and modular tests can be run at scale, so you can maintain a high degree of confidence in your releases even as your team grows. When tests are stable, they can be run automatically to prevent bugs before deployment (or even against each commit before merge!). In this talk, we will cover a range of technical investments that allow your team to run browser-based Selenium tests quickly and reliably. We'll go over frameworks that make Selenium tests easy to write and debug, and tools that let you run hundreds of simultaneous tests cheaply when making a commit. We'll also talk about how to break up your JavaScript code cleanly so that your organization can scale.

Build Better Experiences Everywhere

The term "progressive web app" was coined in 2015 but it's taken us in the tech world a few years to fully support the idea. Only now in 2019 are PWAs widely adopted throughout the industry. PWA's allow you to build your product once and deliver it to every device, on any operating system. They allow you to provide a better experience, faster load times, smaller application sizes, and higher customer engagement. Learn what PWA's are, why they are revolutionizing product development, and how you can implement them in your business. I will cover companies and their success stories with PWAs and dive into relatively technical architectural conversation around implementing PWAs into your tech stack.
